Cuu Long Delta in the Flooding Season

When the harshly summery sunshine is no longer burned in the southwestern regions of Vietnam, it is the time to enter the "flooding season", and also the time for foreign tourists to “pour into”. That special period was not only associated with the people living here but also attracts tourists to explore.

In August or September (lunar calendar) every year, water from Mekong River’s upstream rapidly runs to this place with lightning speed. Water runs to An Giang, Dong Thap first, then "run" down the Mekong Delta provinces such as Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Kien Giang, ... Now, those who living in waterway area readily prepare fishing-net, fishing articles, net, cage to catch shrimps... to catch fishes from the upstream.

For couples of month, the countryside market is flooded with snakeheads, catfishes, anabases, loaches, eels, turtles, snakes, harvest mouse, and cork flowers, lilies…..are very eye-catching. The greatest things are that anabas size is bigger than two fingers’, their fresh and well smelled flesh makes every dishes delicious, from caramel fish, braised fish with pepper, sour soup with lilies or fried fish. Then the fishes jump flexibly are cooked with cork flower, and the harvest mice are brown roasted, all of them are immensely tasting rustic meals.

In this season, the cajuput forest of Tra Su is overflowed, carrying the green duckweed covering shores. Sitting on a small boat, paddling slowly, travelers can watch comfortably the sparkle sunshine glittering through the old forest, inhale full of fragrance of cajuput flower. That is also a vivid world of countless rare birds: storks, herons, accentors, teals, water rails, corks which fly calmly without any care to strangers.

In flooding season, coming to the famous markets in the region such as Cai Rang, Phung Hiep, Cai Rang, ... you will enjoy yourself in the miniature world of entire waterways area with plenty of garden produces. Sometimes there is no need to purchase, only need to watch verdant mango, orange, rambutan, dragon fruit, pomelo...can satisfy your eyes. Being interspersed in the noise of running engine is the laughter of the guests at the market, sweet invitation of small traders. The market is gradually over but the people still remember the feeling of bobbing water making everybody are hesitating not to want to leave.
