How to get to Sapa

How to get to Sapa

Sa Pa town is about 38km from Lao Cai city and about 370km from Hanoi. There are different transport means to get there including trains, coaches (sleeping buses) or private cars.

From Hanoi

Coaches: Coach with beds from My Dinh, Luong Yen or Gia Lam stations to Sa Pa are available at the price of about $14/person/direction. It takes around 8-9 hours. The advantage of this transport is that the coaches move directly to Sa Pa town without stop at any park. There are some coaches running at night like trains.

Some buses companies can take you to Sapa:
  • Hai Van: 04.3871 7171 (Hanoi) – 0203.872.606 (Lao Cai)
  • Ha Son: 04.66.62.62.62
  • Hung Thanh: 0989.294.294
  • VietBus: 043-627.27.27

All of them has many trips per day, departures from 5 p.m, and run throughout the night.

Hiring tourist buses: if you are traveling in a group, hiring a bus is not a bad choice. It will drive you to any destinations as requests. Please contact Christine for more information and the best price.

Trains: There are several choices of seat if you go by train including soft chairs or bed with air conditioning. The train departs at 9 or 10 pm and will be arriving to Lao Cai in the next early morning. Train tickets are various and are often more than $23/person. Hanoi train station is at 120 Le Duan, Hoan Kiem. Phone number to book ticket: 0.43.9423697. the train will stop at Lao Cao station and from there, it takes about $3/person on coach to move to Sa Pa. those coaches are available outside the train station. To save money, you can catch a bus with the price of just $0.5/ person but you have to walk and wait for the bus.

From Ho Chi Minh City
If you begin in Ho Chi Minh City, you can arrive to Hanoi by trains, cars or airplanes. In Hanoi, the journey can be taken as the recommendation above.

Travel Conversation Questions

Lynda R :

I’ll be going up to Hanoi in June and I could barely find any recent reviews on the bus option. Majority of the reviews on the bus recommend against it. So, I’m just wondering how safe would you say the road is? surprise

Michael P :
Yes, people think you will die if you take the bus haha laugh!! I felt more unsafe on the train. We had a few moments of sharp breaking on the highway with the bus, and I’m sure he did speed, but to be honest, you will need to take a taxi or transfer from the train to get to sapa anyways and that drive will be a bit scary too as it around bends and turns with high cliffs – I would take the bus option next time as I love Sapa! wink
Chloe Marie :

Hello. My family of six is planning on going to Sapa and are wondering if it is better to book a regular bus/minivan here in Hanoi and then book a trek as soon as we get there.....or should we book a tour directly from Hanoi? Thanks.

James G :

The easiest thing to do would be to let your hotel in Hanoi organise it for you.
The only issue with this is that they will simply be selling you someone's packaged tour and you will not be able to check out reviews ahead of time.
You might consider searching the "things to do" where you will find many agencies and independent guides.
You might enjoy taking over a homestay in a village. Meals will be included or offered on site, another thing not to worry about.
When will you be going and how long will you stay in Sa Pa?

Chloe Marie :

Thanks. Heading to Sa Pa either tomorrow or the next day. I’m happy we’re here in low season because we haven’t had any problems with last-minute bookings so far

Thomas R :

I think if you go, you should put the tour package to Sapa as the most assured, the tour organizer will take care of you and your family everything, thus will save your time and effort.
You did not specify how many days to go to Sapa, so I could not schedule it to help you.
If you go to Sapa tour, you can choose the following Far East tour
Wish you have interesting experiences in Sapa  laugh

Chloe Marie :

Thanks. We did manage to grab a limo bus to Sapa and Far East tour booked a trekking tour for us (with a guide named Nam). It is fabulous here. Thanks for your help. smiley
