It is really a pity if you come back home from a journey to Bagan without seeing the sunrise or sunset from Shwesandaw tower or riding around the old town.

From October to March of the following year is the perfect time to visit Myanmar. This land seems to be strange to many people because it has just opened its doors recently. However, the country is renewed day by day. While in 2010, Myanmar welcomed just almost 800,000 visitors, it is now becoming an interesting destination in Southeast Asia. A lot of regional airlines open routs to this country, including Thai Airways, Qantas Airways, Vietnam Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Below are several should not- missed -experience:

Balloon excursion in Bagan will take you fly over the thousands of pagodas
This is the common seen image if you visit Bagan in the peak of tourism season.

In Bagan, you have a chance to enjoy a balloon tour. It is such a special feeling to be hovering in the air; watching countless temples and looking down at the ancient lands. Bagan is famous for this 16-year-old type of tourism. However, the price is not cheap, at around $200/person.

If you want to witness the ancient beauty of Bagan more closely, riding a bike is the best choice. By doing so, you are able to take photos and admire the temples. Don’t forget to visit the renowned Shwesandaw Pagoda. It is considered one of the most attractive pagodas in Myanmar. With the old structure which makes it look like a pyramid, Shwesandaw Pagoda is really a challenge for any one because of the big slopes between steps.  It is said that, the pagoda is the storage of 8 Buddhist hair pieces and a number of diamonds, gems and emeralds.

Visiting the world largest book

At the foot of the hill in Mandalay city, there is a complex of Kuthodaw temple, where is believed to store the world largest book with 729 stone steles engraved with Buddhist scriptures. The complex includes many temples and small shrines and each of them contains a stone stele recorded carefully with Buddhist scriptures. This sophisticated project was finished after 7 years of construction. You can enjoy the beauty of the steles but visiting all of them is impossible because of the very large number. It may take more than 1 week to visit all the steles.

Notes

  • Due to the differences between Myanmar and other countries, remember to bring as much cash as you can. Almost transactions are conducted in cash as ATM machines are not common here. In some larger shopping malls or some places for international tourists, you can pay by credit cards or Dollar, but most of the time when you need to pay for things, you should prepare lots of Kyat, the Myanmar currency. Mobile phone or internet usage here is also not easy any more.
  • Don’t forget to bargain the price when you want to buy something as they are all overcharged. Remember to prepare before you flight take off because the airline may use ropes to tie your luggage.
  • Last but not least, as usual, when you visit any temple or pagoda in Myanmar, do dress formally and observe the regulations.
